VFDs operate at a high switching frequency that is associated with high rate of change of the voltage applied to the motor (a high dV/dt value) that can result a peak voltage high enough to cause corona (partial discharge) through the motor’s insulation and cause the motor’s windings to short. NewGen has extensive experience in formulating, manufacturing and testing corona resistant insulation suitable for VFDs.

Glass/Daglas covered round wire
Inverter driven motors need corona resistant wire even if the voltages are as low as 500 volts. A wire with Glass or Daglas covering one or two layers will provide an enhanced corona resistant property. Corona inception voltage gets enhanced after glass or daglas covering. Wire is also available with enamel coating and in specific cases with corona resistant enamel coating. Wire is processed with fine insulation thickness , 0.20 to 0.30 mm depending on the number of layers of glass covering over enamel coating. The insulation will have a dielectric strength of 8 kv between two wires.

Corona resistant flat enameled wire
Due to space constraints when additional wire insulation is not possible, a special enamel with corona resistant property is used for the enamel coating. This coating is complemented with a class 220 amide imide coating for good windability. The wire although has same corona inception voltage but has excellent voltage endurance property thus insulation does not breakdown. However the wire is recommended upto 440 volts windings only. The coating thickness remains same of standard enamel coating. It can be used without any modifications on the slot dimensions or without reducing the wire size.
